Everything you need to know about Moon´s Nodes
The Astronomy, Mythology, and Astrology of the Moon’s Nodes
The Moon’s Nodes are a profound and essential feature in astrology, linked closely with our soul’s evolution and karmic destiny. These points are not physical celestial bodies but rather the intersections where the orbits of the Sun and Moon cross. In this article, we will explore the Moon's Nodes through the lenses of astronomy, mythology, and astrology, and understand their importance in shaping human consciousness and soul growth.
Astronomy of the Moon’s Nodes
The Moon's Nodes consist of two points in the sky: the North Node (or Rahu) and the South Node (or Ketu). These points are defined as the places where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the sky. The two Nodes are always directly opposite one another, forming an axis that remains fixed in the sky over time, slowly moving in a backward motion through the zodiac signs.
The Moon's Nodes do not correspond to physical objects; rather, they represent geometric points in the celestial sphere. The nodes take approximately 18.6 years to complete a full cycle through all twelve zodiac signs. As the Nodes move through the signs, they influence the collective energy of the planet, often marked by significant shifts in human consciousness, growth, and evolution.
Mythology of the Moon’s Nodes
In mythology, the Moon's Nodes are often associated with powerful and enigmatic celestial stories. The Nodes were seen as dragon-like creatures in several ancient cultures, symbolizing a great cosmic serpent or the eclipse myth.
Rahu and Ketu in Hindu Mythology: The North Node (Rahu) and the South Node (Ketu) have significant importance in Hindu mythology, where they are represented as the head and body of a demon. According to the myth, during the churning of the ocean of milk, a demon named Swarbhanu disguised himself as a god to partake in the nectar of immortality. However, he was discovered by the Sun and Moon, who revealed his deception. As a result, Vishnu decapitated Swarbhanu, but the demon’s head (Rahu) and body (Ketu) became immortal, giving birth to the two Nodes. The myth of Rahu and Ketu explains their association with eclipses—Rahu is said to cause the eclipse by swallowing the Sun or the Moon, and Ketu is responsible for their release.
Dragon’s Head and Tail: In Western mythology, the North Node is often referred to as the "Dragon’s Head" and the South Node as the "Dragon’s Tail." This imagery of the dragon signifies an ancient, primal force that drives life forward while also holding on to the past. The North Node, representing our future direction, is the head of the dragon—aggressive, forward-moving, and filled with desire. The South Node is the tail—symbolizing our past, often tied to past life karma, and offering comfort, but also stagnation if we remain too attached.
Astrology of the Moon’s Nodes
In astrology, the Moon’s Nodes are believed to carry great significance in the individual’s spiritual and karmic journey. They represent the soul's evolutionary path, indicating both the lessons to be learned in this lifetime and the karmic patterns to be released.
The North Node: Often described as the “destiny point,” the North Node reveals the soul’s calling or purpose in this lifetime. It represents the qualities, challenges, and experiences that will help you grow and evolve spiritually. The sign and house placement of the North Node in an individual’s natal chart give clues about the qualities and attributes one must develop. In astrology, the North Node is associated with unfamiliar and uncomfortable experiences, as it pushes the soul toward growth. It is the direction toward which the individual must move, even though it often feels foreign.
The South Node: The South Node represents past habits, patterns, and tendencies, which are often developed in previous lifetimes. It signifies our comfort zone, the traits we are familiar with, and the patterns we tend to fall back on. The South Node can often reveal areas where we may resist change or remain stuck, due to past-life conditioning. While the South Node is important for self-awareness and understanding what needs to be released, it is not where we are meant to dwell in this lifetime.
The Nodes are often thought to embody a balance between our past and future. As the South Node pulls us toward what we already know, the North Node challenges us to step out of our comfort zone and grow into something new. The Nodes provide insight into the soul’s greater journey: the North Node is the destination, while the South Node reflects the starting point.
The Role of Eclipses
Eclipses, which occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align near the Moon’s Nodes, are powerful moments of transformation. Solar eclipses occur when the Sun is near the South Node, indicating the potential for releasing outdated patterns and attachments. Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon is near the North Node, offering a time for growth, culmination, and illumination of our true path.
The eclipse cycle lasts for about 18 months and corresponds to the movement of the Nodes through the zodiac signs. These times are seen as windows for significant change, offering opportunities to break through old cycles and embrace new possibilities.
The Moon’s Nodes are deeply significant both in astrology and mythology, representing the timeless themes of growth, transformation, and karmic evolution. While the Nodes are not physical objects, their influence on our lives is profound, guiding our spiritual path and helping us release past patterns in order to fulfill our soul’s purpose. Whether through the astronomy of their celestial movements or the mythological and astrological frameworks that describe them, the Moon’s Nodes are a powerful reminder of our ongoing journey toward balance, self-realization, and evolution.
